The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research.

The Helmholtz Institute HI-TRON is a collaboration of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) with the Research Institute for Translational Oncology at the University Medical Center of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (TRON gGmbH), the University Medical Center Mainz and the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The goal of the partnership is to develop effective immunotherapies and to identify novel biomarkers for assessing the effectiveness of treatment.

The "High-throughput Immunopeptidomics Platform" aims to identify cancer-specific immunopeptides (MHC-ligands), antigens that can trigger the immune response, and potential targets for immunotherapy. To achieve this, we develop and implement LC-MS-based workflows to scrutinize the immunopeptidome in clinical, preclinical, and in vitro studies. Headed by Dr. David Gomez-Zepeda, the platform was founded in June 2023 to provide scientists with cutting-edge LC-MS immunopeptidomics infrastructure and expertise. We are associated with the lab of Prof. Dr. Stefan Tenzer, forming a team of international and multi-disciplinary scientists in an innovation-driven environment.

Job description

The project objective is to develop high-throughput workflows for sample preparation, LC-MS acquisition, and/or data analysis of immunopeptidomics experiments. To facilitate clinical studies, the goal is to achieve the analysis of hundreds of samples per week. The scientist will contribute to collaboration projects from the study design to data analysis and interpretation, aiming to identify antigens in diverse types of cancer in cell culture, tumor, and plasma samples. The specific goals will be adapted to the profile and interests of the selected applicant.

Main tasks:
- Planning and performing experiments and analyzing, interpreting, and reporting the results
- Communicating with collaboration partners and assisting in the coordination of students and technical staff
- Writing scientific publications and presenting at national and/or international conferences
- Optional: operating and maintaining LC-MS instruments (Evosep-One coupled to timsTOF Ultra), and/or the sample preparation robot (Opentrons)

Requirements

- Ph.D. with experience in biochemistry, biotechnology, analytical chemistry, bioinformatics, computational biology, or related fields; or M.Sc. with more than two years of experience
- Keen interest in bioanalytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, biochemistry, immunology, and/or oncology
- Previous experience with MS-based omics and related data analysis is an advantage, but not required
- Strong communication skills in English are required, knowledge of German is advantageous, but not required
- Creativity and strong analytical thinking
- Enthusiastic and motivated team player
